Funeral services were held Thursday, May 6, in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., for dressage rider Joyce Lynn Kuhn, who was killed Sunday, May 2 in a head-on collision near Crestview.
Kuhn, 42, was returning from the Blue Angel Dressage show in Pensacola when her pickup truck and trailer crashed head-on into a car traveling the wrong way on Interstate 10. The driver of the car and Kuhn’s dog were also killed. The two horses Kuhn had competed at the show survived the accident with cuts and bruises.
The Northwest Florida Daily News reported that the trailer bounced into the air and landed on its side atop the wreckage. The horses apparently escaped the trailer and were caught by Good Samaritans who stopped on the interstate, the newspaper said.
A native of Aurora, Colorado, Kuhn was the office manager for the family’s chiropractic clinic in Fort Walton Beach. She was a USDF Bronze Medalist and a breeder of Trakehners. Kuhn’s horse Casmir was the runner-up in the 1999 American Trakehner Association Futurity. Kuhn was a longtime member of the Deep South Dressage and Combined Training Association.
Survivors include Kuhn’s husband, Lawrence William Kuhn; their 3-year-old daughter, Jessica; her mother, Norma Ming Graham of Fort Walton Beach; her brother and sister-in-law, Sidney and Tina Graham of New Iberia, La.; and her sister and brother-in-law, Lisa and Brent Hoffort of Sherman Oaks, Calif.
A trust fund has been sent up for Jessica. Contributions may be sent to: The Jessica Kuhn Trust Fund c/o Gayle Carmichael First National Bank & Trust PO Box 1327 Fort Walton Beach, Fla. 32549
Memorials may also be made the Emerald Coast Foundation, a regional organization that assists at-risk children; or to USDF.
