The Oldenburg breeding community mourns the loss of Jan Vleugels, who died in a tragic accident on June 16 at the age of 64.

A Significant Role

With Jan Vleugels, the Oldenburg breeding family loses a highly respected horseman who, over many years, played a significant role in the development of show jumping breeding with great dedication. As a member of the OS Verband and one of its first licensing commissioners, he helped shape the direction and success of the association from its very beginnings. In his work on the licensing commission, he combined extensive expertise with vast experience and an exceptional eye for horses. He placed particular emphasis on horses with scope, quick reflexes over fences, the right attitude for sport, and modern jumping types with international potential.

Born in Bossut-Gottechain, Belgium, Jan Vleugels worked at Gestüt Wäldershausen, where he met his life partner, Evelyne Blaton. The couple later moved to Vechta, where Evelyne Blaton worked for Paul Schockemöhle while Jan Vleugels was employed at the facility of Schockemöhle’s sister in Telbrake. Together, they worked successfully there for many years.

Highly Respected

As a highly accomplished show jumper, Jan Vleugels was respected far beyond national borders. He represented Belgium in Nations Cup competitions for Juniors and Young Riders and earned international recognition throughout his career. He was equally admired as a gifted trainer and rider, known for his exceptional feel for horses, exemplary position in the saddle and respectful approach to horsemanship. His knowledge, passion for the sport and remarkable ability to identify talented horses, develop them carefully and guide them to success distinguished him in a special way. Until the very end, he remained actively involved in daily riding and continued to school one or two horses each day.

Beyond his professional achievements, the Belgian-born horseman left a lasting impression through his character. He was a man of strong values, straightforward, dependable and always open in his dealings with others. His kindness, willingness to help and genuine interest in people made him a valued colleague, companion and friend to many breeders and riders.

Fondly Remembered

The licensing events held at his Belgian facility will also remain fondly remembered. With tremendous personal commitment and passion, he organised these events and consistently ensured the very best conditions for horses, exhibitors and guests alike. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Jan Vleugels was awarded the Silver Badge of Honour.

The Oldenburg breeding community will remember Jan Vleugels with gratitude as an outstanding horseman, dedicated official and truly remarkable person. Our deepest sympathies go to his life partner Evelyne Blaton, his son Dennis and all members of his family.
