Equine Essentials – Because we get it, live it, and know what you need

Markel’s best, Tracey Scharf and Mary Phelps. Serving, helping, advising, and protecting.
When you insure your equine with us for Full Mortality, we have added (in addition to colic surgery coverage for up to $5,000) coverage for costs that, sadly, can be inevitable. Markel has added coverage for these costs at a very reasonable fee.
Our Equine Essentials addresses three areas that, at some point, impact us as horse owners.
Are you currently insured with us? Please let us know if you want to add this to your policy.
Need equine insurance? You can get started with your equine mortality quote online. The option to select our additional coverages is on the Full Mortality application.
Do you have questions or need a human to help? No problem. Contact me, Mary Phelps (cell/text) 859-940, mary.phelps@markel.com, or Tracey Scharf at my office 9-5 EST, 1-800-572-3286, and we will add this coverage to your current policy.
Horse Equipment and Tack Against Loss or Damage
This provides coverage for horse equipment and tack against loss or damage. (Does not include carriages)
Almost all of us have been in one of these situations: leaving your tack room to go to an awards ceremony, only to return and find equipment missing. Be diligent. This often happens on the last day of a show, when we are all tired and busy finishing up a long show, and trucks and trailers are leaving the show grounds.
Emergency evacuation
In the event of an emergency evacuation of your owned or leased horses that you currently insure on a Markel horse mortality policy, we will pay the following reasonable expenses that you might incur:
• Cost of boarding the horse(s)
• Cost of equine feed
• Cost of transportation to evacuate the horse(s)
The emergency evacuation has to be due to a mandatory order of a governmental authority or civil authority, and is due to an event caused by a covered cause of loss. The limit of insurance is $30 per day, up to 15 days. No deductible applies to this coverage.
Necropsy and Burial Expenses
We never like to discuss this, but a loss is inevitable if you have owned horses for a long time. I’ve been there twice. I was honored to have been there for a friend with their horse during its final moments, when it was too hard for them.
With Markel’s Equine Essentials, we can help ease some of your pain by helping with the cost.
Necropsy and burial expenses (burial, cremation, disposal) are provided if a covered cause of loss causes your horse’s death.

But Wait There’s More
Affordable Personal Horse Owner Liability—For private horse owners, this is excellent coverage to protect you in case, God forbid (I’ve seen it happen), your horse and/or carriage get loose and cause damage.
It’s affordable at $150, with an additional $50 fee for carriage damage. This particular coverage does not require full mortality on your horse(s), but it’s always recommended and not as costly as you think.
