In a 10-horse jump-off against the clock that had plenty of dramatic twists and turns, the 49-year-old rider and his 10-year-old gelding were fourth-last to go against the clock and pipped the target-time set by Britain’s Ben Maher and Enjeu de Grisien who had to settle for runner-up spot.

Spain’s Mariano Martinez Bastida and Belano vd Wijnhoeve Z finished third ahead of rising young French star Jeanne Sadran and Dexter de Kerglenn in fourth, while world number one and double world champion, Sweden’s Henrik von Eckermann, lined up fifth with Calizi.

The 14-leg series stays in Spain next weekend when the action moves to La Coruña. The top-18 riders from the Western European League will qualify for the Longines Final 2024 which will take place in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, next April.
