The latest Florida Whips Youth Athlete Driving Camp was held at the Grand Oaks Equestrian Resort in Weirsdale, Florida, from June 14-16. The camp was the brainchild of USEF/ADS member Karen Cherry and began in 2023 with the vision of meeting the need in the driving community to develop a youth movement in the sport of Combined Driving.

Twenty-one youth drivers, aged 8-18, participated in the event. Each participant was assigned a horse or pony to care for, including routine checks. Volunteers who provided horses and ponies offered help throughout the weekend. The hands-on sessions were especially effective in getting the participants involved.

Experienced trainers and horse professionals, including World Champion drivers, taught lessons on harnessing, safety, feeding, grooming, veterinary care, and more. .By the end of the weekend, all participants were driving and took part in a fun team competition at their respective levels.

Everyone had a wonderful time, and safety was the top priority. “I’m proud of the kids for facing their fears and pushing themselves. This event wouldn’t have been possible without the help of everyone involved, especially my husband Mark. ” said Karen Cherry.

Special thanks to Karolina Wignall for capturing great photos of the Derby competition.
