FEI Beat the Heat: Supporting Horse and Athlete Welfare in Hot and Humid Conditions
Friday, June 26, 2026 | Posted by Mary Phelps
With the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the increasing frequency of heatwaves around the globe, the FEI would like to remind everyone of the practical guidance and educational resources available to support horse and athlete welfare when organizing, officiating, and participating in FEI Events held in hot and humid conditions.
The Guide
The FEI Beat the Heat guide provides practical advice on creating safe, cool, and comfortable conditions for both horses and humans during FEI Events held in hot and humid climates.
It is primarily intended for National Federations, FEI Officials, and Event Organisers, but is also highly relevant for athletes, grooms, and support staff. The guide includes recommendations on heat protection, recovery, and workload management during the warmer months.
We encourage you to download the guide and share it widely within your networks.
Video
The FEI has also produced an animated Beat the Heat video series comprising eight short episodes. The videos explain the effects of heat and humidity on horses and humans, including their impact on performance, training, nutrition, and daily routines.
The series also provides practical advice on preparing for, traveling to, and competing in hot conditions, as well as on recognizing and responding to signs of heat-related illness and emergency situations.
The videos are available on FEI Campus, FEI’s free e-learning platform, in a dedicated playlist accessible without a login.
We encourage you to watch the videos and share them with your members and the wider equestrian community.
