If he ever decides to forego dressage, Guenter Seidel might have a career in show business. Dressed as Elvis, the three-time Olympian brought down the house in a “Viva Las Vegas” quadrille featuring his three “showgirls”: Elizabeth Ball, Michelle Reilly and Sarah Christy at the 2015 Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage Final Dressage Showcase. California-based fashion and costume designer Melanie Sommer worked for two months to put together the elaborate fire-engine red costumes, which had tall feathered headdresses, bustiers and red sequined boots. The midday showcase kicked off with an Intermediare I Freestyle featuring Sabine Schut-Kery riding Alice Womble-Heitmann’s expressive Hanoverian stallion Sanceo, while Steffen Peters showed he has a serious rising star in Akiko Yamazaki’s/Four Winds Farms’ 8-year-old Rosamunde. The Rhinelander mare has enormous presence and more than a few similarities to his former Olympic partner Ravel.
In the Pas de Deux challenge, David Blake and Shannon Peters (ever safety-conscious, Shannon donned a helmet atop her bright red wig) portrayed Batman and Poison Ivy.
Mette Rosencrantz and Anna Dahlberg indulged their Western side with a Wild Wild West routine. And Charlotte Bredahl-Baker and Jan Ebeling stole the show with their Grease-themed routine, which saw Ebeling, as “Danny,” sporting an enormous black wig.
There was also a touching salute to legendary Las Vegas banker Parry Thomas, owner of Debbie McDonald’s Brentina. His horse Wizard, who was Adrienne’s Lyle’s partner at the London Olympics, was formally retired, though by his entrance into the arena, the 16-year-old Oldenburg isn’t lacking in energy.
