Driving Ponies
Driving

Driving Ponies is brought to you by HorsesDaily's "Bossmare" Mary Phelps. "I became an equestrian photographer after a grooming stint on the Harness Race Track in 1978, learning the ropes at the stable of Hall of Famer Billy Haughton. It was there I met old timer Cliff LaTour, a photographer who followed the circuit, and worked for him in between grooming duties. After going out on my own covering mostly Dressage shows, I did my first Combined Driving event at the USET Headquarters in Gladstone, New Jersey in 1980, and fell in love with the sport. It would be 30 years before I got my first pony and small carriage.
Now with my ponies "The Flying Gangsters" Al Capony, Bugsy Malony, Tony Da Pony and the other "Bossmare" Kimba, we have risen to the highest level of competition on the sport, FEI Advanced. We have qualified for the 2019 FEI World Driving Championships for Ponies, which will be in Kisber, Hungary, September 25 - 29. In this section we will document our journey as we prepare to fly ponies, carriages, and ourselves to the Netherlands in early July to train with Bram Chardon, three time World Driving Pony Champion.
