Sounds dramatic, right? But think about it: Life is full of habits.
If you have a habit of always hanging your head and looking down, you will leave little time to make decisions about adjusting your horse’s stride. You also won’t have a good sense of rhythm and speed. And if you do nothing about your habit of looking down, Laura says she can guarantee you that your sense of rhythm and speed will not improve.
Extinguishing bad habits involves cultivating new ones. And that work must be on the subconscious level. If you could change by just reading a book about change or going to therapy, everyone would be replacing all their negative thoughts and behavior with positive ones. But it’s not that easy. Reading doesn’t create change easily or automatically. You need something more.
The Three Essentials of Cosmic Habit-Force
- One of the things you need is repetition. What you use increases; what you don’t use, will atrophy from lack of use. All your talents increase or decrease in proportion to the extent to which you apply them. Once a habit if formed, it becomes easier and easier to follow and more difficult to break.
- The second is “frequency of impression”, which means that the more you do something the faster it becomes a habit.
- Finally, “intensity of impression” is the third essential. It means that the more concentration involved in doing something, the faster it will become a habit.
Make good habits and they will make you. – Laura King
Much of your day consists of successions of actions that have become automatic. 98% of what we do, we do by habit, spontaneously. Each separate act (habit) good or bad, plays a part in making you what you are. Fortunately, it’s never too late, and you’re never too old, to change your habits. You can begin today. You can begin right now, at this very moment. Remember that success is a habit and failure is also a habit. Repetition forms positive habits and negative ones as well.
