My good friend and client Dressage trainer Michelle Folden from Charleston, SC, told me about “Buck” a 12.2 H Section A Welsh Pony (Dandardel Playboy X Doncardeb Sweet Jessy) at her farm who “needs a job”, and sent him to me to give him a try. With my Shetland pair, I call my “Combined Driving Starter Kit” I have wanted to ramp it up a notch, but not to have to buy all new carriages to fit something much larger. Since we didn’t know much about “Buck’s” history other than he had been around the show ring under saddle, I sent him to World Champion Pony Driver and Gold Medalist for the USA Suzy Stafford in beautiful Pennsylvania near my old stomping grounds in Unionville. After she determined he’d be worth the effort, her methodical training has begun, from having blinkers on, to dragging a tire, and this past week, hooking to a cart with a few days of careful ground driving, and now going solo. We stopped by for a visit, and got to see a piece of Suzy's world at home, and how she begins a pony for the "job" of driving.
