Saturday, March 3, 2018
Wellington, FL - Omega Alpha Pharmaceuticals recently awarded its Healthy Horse Award to top dressage competitor Shelly Francis and Doktor during week 7 of the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida. The company - premier maker of all-natural formulations for enhancing equine health and performance - honors horses that best exemplify its dedication to horse health and fitness.
Shelly Francis rides Patricia Stempel’s handsome brown 15-year-old Oldenburg gelding who is by Diamond Hit out of Gurena by Renoir I. Trained and ridden by Francis at the Grand Prix level, “We are showing in the freestyles and CDI-Ws to continue with our qualifying scores to make the short squad for the World Equestrian Games. So far we are doing OK.” The pair consistently scores in the 70th percentile at the fiercely competitive AGDF.
How does Francis keep Doktor fit and loving his job? “I spend extra money to give the horses good quality timothy and alfalfa hay,” she begins. “They don’t get tons of grain. Then I make sure they always get their turnout and light hack days so they are not concentrating on work every single day.” She says that this regime keeps the horses “fresher in their minds, and that works really well for me.”
Francis grew up in Bar Harbor, Maine, where her family still has a 30-acre farm. She became known as a diligent rider, and by 1996, she was second alternate for the U.S. Olympic team riding Pikant. In 1997, the pair won the U.S. Dressage Federation’s Grand Prix Champion Horse of the Year, and they went on to compete at the 1998 FEI World Equestrian Games in Rome. In 2005, she rode Dominion to the top six in the U.S. team rankings. She now lives and trains the Stempel horses in Loxahatchee, Florida, where her credentials continue to grow. Among many successes, she and Doktor were the Traveling Alternate combination for the U.S. dressage team at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
Francis received an Omega Alpha cooler and a large collection of their award-winning health products, which are developed using botanical ingredients through research-based science. ”I’m very excited to try Omega Alpha products for my horses,” says Francis enthusiastically. “I hope it makes them feel better.”
