Oklahoma City, Okla.,- The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is proud to announce the newest champion crowned at this year’s North American Affiliate Championships.
Meet Reed Kyle who won the Limited Non Pro Championship aboard Zins Smart Wrangler (Starlights Wrangler x Smart Rowdy Lady x Smart Chic Olena), a 6-year-old gelding owned by his mother, Tamra Kyle.
The 24-year-old rider, who qualified at the Southwest Affiliate Regional Championship, was thrilled with his win. “This has been a great show so far, it started really well, and ‘Wrangler’ has been wonderful for me,” said Reed following the rich awards presentation. “On top of qualifying for the finals here, we also showed at the NRBC and at the NRHA Derby. I’ve had him since the beginning of this year, even though we’ve known him since he was born as he was actually bred (by Patricia Moore) and raised at our place. We knew how good minded he was - and we ended up getting him. He’s such a good hearted and honest horse and I’m so proud of him!”
Reed is no stranger to the reining world having grown up with his dad, NRHA Professional Pete Kyle. “I grew up on the ranch but it wasn’t until my mid-teens that I got hooked. This past year, since dad has been very busy with AQHA, I’ve been riding with Carol and Steve Metcalf and they’ve really helped me with this horse. It’s been a lot of fun!”
Along with the title, Reed took home a Bob’s Custom Saddle, a Montana Silversmiths Custom Trophy Buckle, a Classic Equine product, a Platinum Performance product, a pair of Anderson Bean Boots, an Adequan product, a $150 SmartPak Gift Card, an embroidered halter provided by Markel, a blanket from Avila Pro Shop and Bluebonnet Feed supply.
Tying for the Reserve Champion was Holly Valerio, riding Soula Dualla, and Paige Barton riding Diamond Oak.
Paige and her 6-year-old gelding by Like A Diamond and out of Jr Colored Oak (by Docs Oak) had set the pace early in the draw by scoring a 212. “Two months ago I went to the Vegas show and my horse was running off with me…after handing the reins over to my trainer, Martin Padilla, things changed and here we are,” said the enthused 17-year-old who qualified at the West Coast Reining Horse Association Affiliate Regional Circuit. “I’ve had my horse since February this year and I fell in love with him. I didn’t think we would qualify for the finals but after our first show, where we were third, we started winning and here we are! This is great and I love my buckle!”
Holly, who qualified at the West Coast Reining Horse Association circuit, and her Soula Dualla (Soule Jule Star x Prittie Gallitia x Gallo Del Cielo), also a 6-year-old gelding, equaled Paige’s score. “I have a very good horse and an awesome trainer, Mack Weaver, who actually found Soula Dualla for me. Today was a great start to my show since I will also be showing in the Novice Horse Level 2 and in the Rookie of the Year!” said Holly. “It’s really difficult to qualify so I am super happy to be here in OKC.”
For the reserve championship the riders were awarded a Montana Silversmiths Custom Trophy Buckle, a Classic Equine product, an Adequan product, an embroidered Halter provided by Markel, a blanket from Avila Pro Shop and Bluebonnet Feed supply.
