Omega Alpha Healthy Horse Award Presented to Magico’s Blue Marquesa and Dr. Natalie Lord at the 2018 IALHA National Championships

For veterinarian, Dr. Natalie Lord, being honored by winning the Omega Alpha Healthy Horse Award at the 2018 International Andalusian and Lusitano Horse Association (IALHA) National Championships was an added bonus to an overall great show. Lord, and her Half-Andalusian mare, Magico’s Blue Marquesa, showed in a total of 10 classes throughout this 5-day extravaganza that took place at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, Texas on Oct 9-13th. The pair triumphed by taking Reserve Champion in the Half-Andalusian dressage suitability open class, which also earned them the Omega Alpha Healthy Horse Award. “Getting Reserve in this Half-Andalusian Dressage Suitability and winning the Omega Alpha Healthy Horse Award in the class was definitely the highlight of IALHA Nationals for me,” Lord smiles, “I secretly hoped I would (at least!) get Reserve in the tough class. But what made me feel even better was that we had a good ride, and that is a win in any arena for me,” she adds.
Magico’s Blue Marquesa, affectionately known as Marquesa (or “Moo Mare”) is an 8-year-old blue roan, half-Andalusian mare by Magico VIII (Andalusian stallion x Rancho del Lago) and Flo On By (AQHA mare x Limited Hancock) and bred by Rita Andrews of Horsefly Farm in Bastrop, TX. “I am so proud of my mare!” boasts Lord, “Every ride feels better and better and she rocked it this week! Every class she got more and more correct and confident which was a win for me!” she reflects.
Lord also explains that a very special part about this show is gathering together with all of the other Iberian horse owners and celebrating these noble breeds. “What really made the show special to me was not only how well behaved my horse was or how well she went in classes, but it was seeing my old friends and making new friends at the show. I love how our team helped each other and it was so good to see all my horse-show friends!” She continues, “I missed them a ton and I don't get to go out and see them as often as I'd like. I hope I can join them for more shows and fun in Working Equitation.”
Working Equitation classes continue to emerge and become more popular here in the U.S. – and baroque breeds such as the Andalusian and Lusitano seem to excel at the sport. This three-phased competition begins with the Dressage phase – a test of classic dressage skills and movements, then continues to Ease of Handling phase, which demonstrates their partnership by navigating an obstacle course, and finally, the Speed phase in which they re-do part of the course at speed. Lord explains that she has set competing in Dressage and Working Equitation as a goal for Marquesa and herself, but adds, “Every day that I get to see my horse, groom her and care for her is a blessing – so we will take it one ride at a time!”
Omega Alpha shares these same feelings about being dedicated to improving horses’ well being and, in turn, horses’ performance. Therefore, it is important to them to honor owners and trainers, like Lord, who make great health a top priority for their horses. The Healthy Horse Award includes an assortment of popular Omega Alpha health products, a cooler, and a commemorative ribbon. Lord was excited to receive the award and to be recognized by Omega Alpha. “I have heard great things about their Probiotic (Biotic 8), and Vitamins and Minerals Formula. I really like their Herba Coat Conditioner Spray. Makes their coat soft and shiny!” she describes.
