Nick Wagman's Olympic Dreams Dashed With An Injury To Don John
Tuesday, February 18, 2020
One of US Dressage's brightest lights was dimmed a bit, with news of an injury to Olympic hopeful Nick Wagman's Don John. While it is just a temporary setback, nonetheless there will not be enough time after recovery to meet all qualification criteria.
On Nick's facebook page he shared
Today was one of those days that knocked me down, and had me wondering if I was tough enough to get back up?
Don John injured himself, and heartbreakingly our journey towards Tokyo has come to an end. The good news is he will be fine, just not in time to complete the necessary qualifications. It was a blow to the gut to say the least. Not to just to me, but to everyone involved on our team, his owners, his grooms, his vet and farrier, and all of our friends and family who have been cheering us on the entire way.
And what a way it’s been.
We went to Europe and represented The United States on two Nation’s Cup teams. We came back and became National Champions in Chicago.
And now we are here in Wellington where we achieved our personal best score in the Special and were standing third in the Olympic rankings.
It’s been an intense year filled with emotion, hard work, and sacrifice . So much behind the scenes goes into being able to pursue this that when you get knocked down the thought of doing it all over again really does seem inconceivable.
But I’m learning life doesn’t get easier, you just get tougher.
So up I will get, grateful and proud for having gotten this far with my partner DJ, and even better we will be the next time we canter down centerline together.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of you who have been cheering for us all this time.
