The 2023 Rolex Grand Prix at Aachen is the pinnacle for every great jumper rider and horse. The Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping was in anticipation of the 1.5 million dollar achievement that had only been achieved once in the 10 year history of the event, by Scott Brash in 2025.

During the 2023 Aachen Tournament another horse and rider combination were poised for the elusive victory, to win the 1.5 million dollar Rolex Grand Slam. “Annie” HH Azure was Ward’s partner for the previous two wins that made him Aachen’s Grand Slam contender—the Rolex Grand Prix of Geneva (Switzerland) in December and the Rolex Grand Prix ‘s-Hertogenbosch (the Netherlands) in March. The 17-year-old Belgium Warmblood (Thunder VD Zuuthoeve—Sion VD Zuuthoeve, Sir Lui VD Zuuthoeve) mare is owned by Ward and Double H Farm.

McLain Ward and his beloved “Annie” HH Azure had. Mclain knew the day would come when Annie would retire, and he chose to do it on her terms at Aachen. The always electric stadium was the setting as McLain and Annie entered the arena. In a slow and rhythmic canter, they halted and waited for the bell, then began their round.

I Knew This Day Would Come

This would be Annie and Mclain’s moment, to retire in this arena, at this time. After her second jump, and lightly hitting a rail, McLain brought her to a gentle canter, saluted the stadium, and walked her to the outgate.

“I knew this day would come,” Mclain said on his Facebook page, ” but somehow you always were able to reach deep inside and achieve greatness time and time again. We all know there comes a time when your mind and body disagree but it is still hard to let go.”  You have given all of us so much but it’s time to say goodbye to our sport and retire in good health.
I knew from our beginning you were better than me and that it would take every bit of my ability to not let you down. Your wings carried all of us whose lives you have touched on an incredible journey that is the epitome of why we seek such lofty goals and pursue them with such passion.
You are the very definition of a queen. It was a privilege to have been the one to ride on your wings, to be your partner and to be part of your life.”

Giving Thanks to The “Annie” Team

Ward then continued to thank all who have been a part of their journey.
Special thank you to Lee, Erica, Virginie, Kirstie, The Mathy family, The Harrison family and all of our incredible team.
I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in Annie and my journey. Without each and every one of you the story we’ve written would not have been possible. I’m forever grateful for your contributions and I have no doubt Annie has touched your life in a positive way as she has everyone’s.
Happy retirement my Queen ❤️
