When you see my ads and banners for , you see my photo and name, but the people behind the company name and logo are the team behind what provides the protection you need in our industry. Equine insurance is a special niche within the insurance industry with its own set of niche needs. Markel historically has been a company which specializes in providing protection in areas where not all insurance companies dare to tread. For over 45 years Markel has been a leader in the industry of equine mortality, liability and farm owner related coverages. From the chairman of the board on down to the underwriters and associates in Markel's Claims Department (who handle the late night emergency calls) are people with a passion for horses; many horse owners themselves who know your worries and fears.
There are several departments which handle all equine related insurance needs, from the Horse Mortality and Theft policies also providing Medical/Surgical coverages, to our Farm Owner and Liability Department who help Tracey and I make sure all applications are done with proper detail and information needed. And then there are "The Claims Angels" most who are horse owners themselves. They understand the panic and fear which sometimes goes with a late night call you hoped you would never have to make.
It’s always a good time had by all when we visit Markel Headquarters in Glen Allen, Virginia. Our days are organized with meetings, agendas, and brain storming, and the evenings usually involve a dinner or two out with Markel’s Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, Alan I. Kirshner and his wife Debby. They raise beautiful Arabians on their nearby farm and are leaders in the world of Arabian Horse Racing. Alan also knows a good bottle of wine to add to the menu! Debby shares her latest images on her I-Pod of her incredible stock. There is a sparkle in the eyes of all who we work with at Markel, especially when you get them to share their own horse stories.
