Ludger Beerbaum at the 1997 CHIO Aachen

Long before digital cameras and instant social media, every frame mattered.
I came across this portrait I photographed of Ludger Beerbaum at the 1997 CHIO Aachen, and it brought back so many memories of an extraordinary era in show jumping.
Even then, Ludger was already one of the sport’s great champions—calm under pressure, endlessly competitive, and setting a standard that riders around the world admired.
Nearly three decades later, his influence on international show jumping remains just as strong. While his role has evolved from championship competitor to mentor, trainer, and leader of one of the world’s premier equestrian operations, his commitment to excellence has never changed.
Going through these thousands of images has reminded me how fortunate I was to witness—and photograph—so much of our sport’s history.
There are many more hidden gems to come.
