Lexington, KY – Children across Kentucky dubbed the new Alltech National Horse Show mascot Bucky, Brownie, Jumper and Allstar. Yet only one name resonated in the Bluegrass state. Today Alltech counts itself very lucky to introduce a mascot named Tucky.
More than 600 children from across Kentucky offered original names, wrote imaginative stories and colored cartoon depictions of the new mascot for the Alltech National Horse Show. The show is the nation’s most prestigious indoor horse show, once held at Madison Square Garden and now hosted annually at the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park.
In a contest held in partnership with the Lexington Herald-Leader, Alltech asked Kentucky’s children for help naming the new Alltech National Horse Show mascot – a horse dressed in a tuxedo, top hat and show ribbon. Children also were asked to write a short story describing how the horse rose to fame at the Alltech National Horse Show and to color an outline of the mascot that appeared in the Lexington Herald-Leader and on Kentucky.com throughout September.
“Our Alltech National Horse Show mascot was a horse with no name and no story. But now, thanks to the hundreds of Kentucky children who participated in our contest, we have a story to tell about our mascot and a suitable name for him that celebrates the Commonwealth,” said Dr. Pearse Lyons, president and founder of Alltech. “And through our mascot contest, Alltech is telling another story – one about the vibrant imaginations of Kentucky’s children.”
Entries were sent in from all around Central Kentucky, with submissions from elementary and middle schools in Paris, Stanford, Danville, Georgetown, Lexington and more. Children wrote tall tales about how this horse beat out his competitors on the racetrack, joined the circus and surprised his family by jumping to incredible heights. His tuxedo took on an array of colors, from traditional black, to All-American red, white and blue stripes, to shimmering magenta.
Alltech and the Lexington Herald-Leader editorial staff selected three winners for the contest: the best story, the best name and the best coloring of the mascot. Congratulations to the following winners:
· Name Winner: “Tucky” by Cherie Dennis, age 11, of Paris, KY.
· Story Winner: “Prancer and His Perseverance” by Mia Albornoz, age 12, of Lexington, KY.
· Coloring Winner: “Skittles” by Kimberly Collins, age 11, of Stanford, KY.
Winners will receive a family prize pack to attend the Alltech National Horse Show. In addition, the winning entries were featured in the Oct. 23 edition of the Life and Neighbors section of the Lexington Herald-Leader.
Families can meet Tucky and view the contest entries in the children’s activities area at the Kentucky Gathering, a celebration of horses, heritage and hops, on Nov. 1-2 at the Alltech Arena.
