The second week of the AIR Show Jumping Winter Classic kicked off the second week of January at the Florida Horse Park in Ocala, Florida. The week featured another full line up of top hunter, jumper, and equitation competition with riders from across the nation participating. The first feature class of the week, the $5,000 Winter Classic Welcome Stake saw 21 horse-and-rider combinations compete over Chris Barnard’s track with Erin Haas and Hagelin taking the top honors.

Twelve entries returned for the shortened jump-off track including Haas, Hayley Waters, Camille Maddrix, and Summer Hill among several others. Three of the returning competitors had an unlucky rail or two in the final phase but still placed in the top 12. On their return, Haas and North Face Farm’s eight-year-old Hanoverian gelding (Stolzenberg x Grafin Top) Hagelin put a distance of just under a second between themselves and the runner-up combination after flying through the final timers in 34.880 seconds.

“I’ve had Hagelin since he was seven and have just started competing him in bigger prix classes,” Haas explained. “I also competed him in the Welcome Stake last week and was double clean but was not fast enough for the company so this week my goal was to practice and go faster.”

She continued that her partner is naturally a fast-footed horse and the day’s track suited him. “I’ve enjoyed riding the courses this week so far,” Haas said. “I think we made up the time from the second to third fence while just moving around the track as quickly as I could which was easy because it was a very smooth track.”

Haas and Hagelin will return for the $25,000 Winter Classic Grand Prix on Saturday, January 16.

Hayley Waters and Dana Waters’ 11-year-old Warmblood gelding Just Luck landed the second place podium spot after clocking in at 35.840 seconds. Julie Cleveland Beam of Argyle, Tx and Anastasia Stewart’s Lancelot rounded out the top three. She and the 13-year-old Warmblood gelding secured a time of 36.090 seconds in the final phase.

Competition on Friday, January 15 will focus on the hunter discipline highlighting the $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby.
