Drive By Shots in Loxahatchee

Loxahatchee, FL – Reid & Associates Veterinary Practice hosted their second-annual free rabies vaccination event for the community this past week. This event was open to local pet owners and offered free rabies vaccinations for horses as well as for dogs and cats. In a celebratory atmosphere horse trailers pulled in and their animals were vaccinated and weighed. Later many attendees returned for a barbeque lunch and raffle also hosted by Reid & Associates.
The annual event was the brainchild of Reid & Associates Office Manager, Cheryl Marlowe, who worried that horse owners might be forced to cut out vaccinations due to the tough economic times. “It is a way for us to give back to the community”, said Jan Zenobia, clinic receptionist. And the local community was extremely appreciative. By the end of the day the clinic vaccinated 83 horses, 25 dogs, and two cats.

Dr. Erin Newkirk and Dr. Ashley Barnard vaccinated a number of horses during the 2nd Annual Event as a send off. Dr. Barnard recently finished her internship with Reid & Associates and participated at this event before starting her new career with Calder Race Horse. In addition to Dr. Newkirk and Dr. Barnard’s treatment to the horses, Dr. Kim Grewal provided the canine and feline vaccine administration and care. DVM interns Jodie Stowell and Nikole McGreevey also donated their time to vaccinate horses for the event.

Purina Equine Specialist Carlos Munoz, personally weighed the horses and dogs as they visited the clinic and handed out gift certificates for $10.00 towards Purina products.

“It is really great that Reid & Associates and their staff are doing this for our community and our animals,” said Ellen Alvarez of Loxahatchee Groves.  Alvarez and her neighbor brought six horses for vaccines. “I think it shows us that the vets and staff here really care about the animals in our community,” added Alvarez.

In addition to the free rabies vaccination, discount pricing was available for Eastern & Western encephalomyelitis (EEE), West Nile Virus (WNV), Tetanus, Influenza, and Rhinopneumonitis vaccines. This comes at a perfect time, since Florida Agriculture and Consumer Service Commissioner Charles Bronson urges vaccinations for EEE since 16 cases have arisen this year. Seven cases were discovered within a day in different counties throughout Florida in late June.

Sponsors that supported the annual free rabies event, raffled gift certificates to for Tackeria, Gold Coast Feed, Hole in the Wall Feed, Pfizer, Red Barn, Van Dell Jewelers, Two Free Exams by Animal Eye Specialty Clinic and an equine teeth float by Reid & Associates.
