The competition schedule has been released for The 2014 FEI World Breeding Championships for Dressage Young Horses Selection criteria with several CDI's across the country being available for those hoping to compete in Verden as each combination is required to attend one selection trial and one qualifyer. Paralympian Jonahtna Wentz lives on in two new ways with a scholarship fund for defraying competition cost as well as one the awards accomplishments in the Para-Equestrian sport. There is a recent study that was done to find out which tone that horses responded to when spoken to by humans. Iron Spring Farm's new website has a great article about saddle fit for the shorter backes, more compact type dressage horses giving great insight to finding the right fit.By far we have a much more quiet weekend this week and we start in California. We  have the Dressage Derby V in Vacaville, CA, the 16th Annual DASC Championship Show in Somis and the Yarra Yarra Dressage September in Pleasanton. Heading up the coast into the northwest we have the Oregon Dressage Society Open in Sherwood, OR. In the midwest we have the Summer Fest Breed Show in Bonner Springs, KS and the Oshkosh Dressage Classic in Oshkosh, WI. The rest of the action this week takes place in the south with the the San Antonio Fall Dressage I and II in San Antonio, TX, The Last Dance in Folsom, LA, the Poplar Place Farm September Dressage in Hamilton, GA, the Dressage at Greystone in Fayetteville, TN, the Cool Down Dressage in Pinehurst, NC, the MSEDA Dressage at the Park I and II in Lexington, KY and the VADAF Dressage at Rose Mount Farm I and II in Spotsylvania, VA.

Paralympian Jonathan Wentz is continuing to make headway even after his passing in the Para Dressage division. Two wonderful opprotunities are being offered in Jonathan's name. The first is the Jonathan Wentz Memorial Scholarship Fund that will help offset cost of competitions up to $1,000 per competition. The second is the Jonathan Wentz Memorial Trophy which will go to a Para-Equestrian that has "competed and excelled in multiple international competitions and received scores that contributed to the Individual and/or Team ranking on the FEI ranking list during the competition year". There was a study done recently that tested how a horse responds to the human voice. Katrina Merkies, PhD, associate professor and equine program coordinator at the University of Guelph in Ontario lead the study with 8 Draft horses to try and find out how they responded to the human tones of low pleasant, high pleasant, low stern and high stern. The horses responses were recorded and data crunched. See what the researchers found here!

Jochen Schleese, CMS, CSFT, CEE has a great article on Iron Spring Farms new website under the News section about saddle fit for Friesians. The article talks about how current breeding styles of baroque horses (Friesians, Andalusians, etc) as well as modern warmbloods are leaning toward a more compact, shorter backed horse and thus saddle fit is becoming somewhat of an issue with too long of panels.
