Friends and neighbors of The Poulin School of Dressage Mary Phelps and her husband JJ. Hathaway hosted lunch for the participants of the North American Dressage Trainer’s Symposium, warming up the chilly participants with homemade chili, 30 feet of Quizno’s subs, and JJ. Mom’s famous Grandma Gooch’s Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Phelps, an equine insurance specialist with Markel Insurance, utilized a portion of her 2004 sponsorship budget provided by Markel for the occasion. With 5 crock pots keeping the vegetarian chili warm, they ladled out lunch to the 75 participants, giving everyone a chance to warm up for the afternoon session.

The Poulin School of Dressage and Phelps/Hathaway aren’t just neighbors by coincidence. In fact Michael Poulin credits Mary Phelps and her husband JJ. Hathaway for the reason they settled in DeLeon Springs, Florida, a charming rural area 20 miles west of Daytona Beach.

“Several years ago, Michael’s nephew National Pairs Driving Champion Larry Poulin came to give me some driving lessons with my mare.” Phelps recalls. “We drove the carriage over to Spring Garden Ranch, a Standardbred training facility with several empty barns, and I encouraged Larry to get his Uncle up here to check it out.” The rest is now part of Poulin history. Within a few years a few friends and students of the Poulins purchased property a mile away and built the facility that is now The Poulin School of Dressage.
