The dressage world is mourning the loss of two of its greatest legends as Carl Hester announced the passing of Valegro and Uthopia—partners not only in sport but in life. Revered globally for their brilliance in the arena and their gentle spirit behind the scenes, the pair leave behind a legacy that helped redefine modern dressage.

Sleep well Blueberry and Uti, two of the greatest horses of our generation,” Hester wrote in an emotional tribute that has resonated throughout the equestrian community.

Icons Who Transformed a Sport

Valegro, often lovingly known as Blueberry, became a household name after rewriting dressage history with Charlotte Dujardin—earning double Olympic gold in London 2012, individual gold in Rio 2016, and breaking world records multiple times. Uthopia, Hester’s own Olympic partner, was equally admired for his elasticity, expression, and heart. Together, they helped Great Britain secure historic team medals and vaulted the nation into a new era of international dressage prominence.

But for Hester, their true legacy went far beyond medals.

Valegro and Uthopia did more than win medals and write history, they gave our sport a golden era. They showed that greatness can be gentle, sensitive and harmonious, and they made a nation proud and inspired so many.

A Partnership Forged Side by Side

In his tribute, Hester reflected on how intertwined the horses’ lives were—something few outside the inner circle ever truly understood.

Their entire lives ran in parallel; they travelled to the shows side by side, lived in neighbouring stables, grazed in the same fields and retired together. Their bond and companionship were absolute.

Both geldings enjoyed long, carefully managed retirements at Hester’s yard, adored by staff, riders, and fans alike. But as they aged, health challenges became increasingly difficult. Hester made the heartbreaking but compassionate choice to let them go together—ensuring their partnership remained unbroken.

Allowing them to leave this world together was the final act of loyalty and dignity… honouring a partnership that had never been separated in life.

A Loss Felt Around the World

The decision, though made with love, has left a palpable emptiness at the legendary Gloucestershire yard.

The yard just doesn’t feel the same without them; there’s an emptiness in the air.

They leave behind a huge void, and the yard has changed forever and so have we. They were our family and I will love and miss them always.

For Hester—and for the global dressage community—their absence marks the end of a chapter that shaped not only competitive sport, but hearts and memories worldwide.

What They Leave Behind

As Hester beautifully expressed, the true gift of horses transcends the physical:

We don’t get to keep horses forever. We only get to carry what they leave inside us. And these two left us so much.

Quiet, expressive, charismatic, and utterly devoted—Valegro and Uthopia reshaped what was possible in the dressage arena and demonstrated the depth of partnership between horse and rider.

They will be remembered not simply as champions, but as once-in-a-lifetime souls whose impact will live on in every rider they inspired.
