EQUIHEMP was founded with the mission of bringing the natural benefits of the hemp plant to horses in America. While hemp has been utilized to benefit the health of horses for thousands of years, it has been illegal to grow in the U.S. since 1937. Fortunately, as of 2018, hemp has again been legal to cultivate in the U.S., and we can again grow and use the plant for its many great uses.

Founder Eduardo Pérez discovered the wonders of hemp after investing in Pet Releaf, one of the first pet CBD companies. Eduardo saw the benefits of hemp-derived products for dogs and cats.

As a competitive polo player and, thus, owner of a string of horses, Eduardo began researching how hemp products could help his equine partners realize their full potential.

After selling the Atlanta-based advertising agency he founded in 2003 in 2021, Eduardo began focusing on the concept that would become EQUIHEMP. During the Spring of 2023, Eduardo launched the company, basing it in Aiken, SC, and focused on offering products that would give us “happier, healthier horses.”

EQUIHEMP offers grown and processed hemp bedding, hemp seed oil, hemp hulls, and hemp meal snacks. It also distributes equine CBD products from Cannahorse and Equine Releaf and pet CBD products from Pet Releaf, the #1 brand in the USA.

Mary Phelps and the Flying Gangsters

At the FEI Live Oak International 2024, EquiHemp introduced its product as a bedding option. We tried it. It was clean, dust-free, and comfortable for my ponies to lie down and relax at a busy show stable. I decided then and there to switch my barn completely over and love, love, love this product. There is no dust and very little waste as it is so absorbent. We spread it in our trails around the property. It quickly decomposes and blends as the best compost and footing we could have ever imagined using.

Healthy Horse on EquiHemp Oil

“The EQUIHEMP hemp seed oil has been fabulous for my gelding Lovey. He is a 21-year-old German Oldenburg. Before starting hemp seed oil, his coat was dull with itchy skin, his feet never seemed to be healthy, and he cribbed. I tried many supplements to help with all the issues above, but nothing helped with any of them. Due to poor hooves, he had to wear shoes all around. But since starting the hemp seed oil, his feet are much healthier, and he doesn’t have to have shoes. His coat looks amazing, with no itchy skin. And the best of all: he no longer cribs!

Hemp seeds and hemp meal serve as a nutrient-dense feed source for livestock due to their high concentrations of protein, minerals, and essential fatty acids. Research indicates that incorporating these hemp products into animal diets can enhance overall health and improve feed conversion rates.

The inclusion of hemp meal provides a balanced amino acid profile and a beneficial ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids. These nutritional properties help support the immune system, which may decrease the necessity for routine antibiotic treatments in industrial farming environments.

🌿 The Surprising History of Hemp in Colonial America
Did you know hemp was one of the very first crops grown in colonial America? Long before modern industries discovered its value, hemp played a crucial role in the daily life, economy, and even the national security of the early colonies.
Beginning in the 1600s, European powers relied heavily on hemp for essential products like rope, sails, and cordage. Because these materials were vital for naval power, the English Crown actually required colonies such as Virginia to grow hemp. Massachusetts, Connecticut, and others even offered bounties to encourage production.
By the 1700s, hemp had become a familiar sight on farms throughout the mid-Atlantic and New England regions. Major historical figures—including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson—grew hemp for industrial uses on their estates. Colonial Americans depended on hemp for everything from clothing and paper to ship rigging, wagon covers, and fishing nets.
During the American Revolution, hemp took on an even greater importance. It supported the war effort by providing critical materials such as tents, ropes, uniforms, and canvas. In many ways, hemp helped hold the young nation together—literally.
Although the crop’s prominence faded in the 19th century with the rise of cotton and imported fibers, its legacy lives on. And today, as the hemp industry surges back to life, it’s exciting to see modern growers and manufacturers reconnect with a plant that helped build early America.
Hemp has always been part of our history—and now it’s becoming part of our future.
