Nancy M. Smith, the Teacher

Nancy recalls one of the biggest moments in her career she has experienced was during one of her clinics in rural Ohio . "I had a woman with her 14-year-old horse who had never cantered on the right lead, and we got it. I usually ask before beginning a session with a student in a clinic 'what is on your to do list?'" said Nancy . "And to canter on the right lead was what she wanted to do."

In spite of all her successes in the competitive arena, it is her work as a teacher which gives Nancy M. Smith the most satisfaction. Nancy has a gift for explaining things in a way people can grasp. Once again, Nancy credits her college background, which included psychology courses, for helping her to be more understanding and intuitive to her students' needs. "It is hard to say which I enjoy more, riding or teaching, they both motivate me to do the other one better." Nancy has been teaching a series of clinics in the Ohio , Kentucky areas, working with some students for as long as 18 years. "I love to make the horses happy." explains Nancy . "My greatest pleasure is getting the rider and horse happy together."

As a rider teaching her horses, Nancy pulls from her years of experience having ridden hundred and hundreds of many different horses, all breeds and ages. "As a rider I like to find a way to get along with any horse." said Nancy . "I can usually find something positive, and build on that."
