August 25, 2006 Bernadette Pujals’ Trip to the Top of the World By Karen Robinson
Lost and Found Berna’s personal road to Aachen has been a rough one; she was separated from her horse for two months, to be reunited with him only two weeks before the WEG. She was qualified to represent Mexico at WEG last winter; by March she was already working on her game plan and her freestyle for Aachen. She intended to travel in early June to Germany with Vincent, a fourteen year old Hannoverian stallion by Weltmeyer, to train with her coach of the past two years, Jonny Hilberath. Vincent did travel to Germany in June, but without Berna. In the middle of a divorce, she was forced to give up her horse, whom her recently ‘ex’ husband intended to sell. After watching her beloved horse and her WEG dreams disappear, she spent some weeks thinking hard about what is important to her. Besides her ten year old daughter, Vincent is her life. “They took him away around the tenth of June and on the seventeenth he went to Germany to be sold. This horse is my friend. I could not just let him go.” Berna negotiated over some weeks with the support of friends, and eventually a deal was struck. Vincent would be returned to her. It would only cost her the home and farm she built in Mexico City. “I have had to give up everything for him.” |
