Father, Like Son-Tim Lips, Second Generation Olympian
By
Karen Robinson
If
Holland’s sole entry in the 2008 Olympic three-day-event were
to quit riding tomorrow, he would already have achieved as much as
his father Martin did in Barcelona in 1992, where he placed fifteenth
individually in Olympic eventing. The 22 year old from Made, Holland
appeared out of nowhere from a country that rarely sends competitors
to major eventing championships, and with his KWPN gelding Oncarlos,
followed step for step in his father’s footprints by placing
fifteenth in eventing at the Beijing Olympics in Hong Kong.
His
quiet character and diminutive size (he is just 5’6”)
are hardly representative of what is contained under the surface:
a determined and disciplined, not to mention talented, young man.
He was not the youngest event rider in Hong Kong; that distinction
belongs to nineteen year old Alex Hua Tian, China’s first ever
entry in the discipline. But if there were prizes to recognize up-and-comers
at the Olympics, he would be the uncontested champion in equestrian
sport. Read More ........

Miles Jumps Up to Individual Silver
Germany
Proves Invincible at 2008 Olympic Games in Eventing
By
Joanie Morris
Hong
Kong, China – Gina Miles waved the flag for the US tonight
at Sha Tin, winning an Individual Silver medal with McKinlaigh. The
duo jumped two textbook clean rounds, adding nothing to their two-day
score of 56.1. “I always knew he was the best event horse in
the world,” said Miles. “He had his day to shine at the
Olympic Games.”
The 14-year-old
Irish Sport Horse owned by Thom Schulz and Laura Coats stepped around
the show jumping courses like an open hunter. Miles, from Creston,
CA, represented the US at the 2002 World Equestrian Games and the
2007 Pan American Games. Read

Carter Top Canadian Following Cross-Country
Hong
Kong, China – Kyle Carter of Calgary, AB, is the top Canadian
following cross-country, the second of three phases comprising the
equestrian sport of eventing, at the 2008 Olympic Games. Carter is
in 32nd position individually while the Canadian Eventing Team is
in ninth position overall.
Carter, who had been sitting in 61st position following the opening
phase of dressage, made an impressive leap up the leader board following
Monday’s cross-country phase. Riding Madison Park, a 10-year-old
thoroughbred gelding owned by Carter and Nicole Shinton, Carter was
only the second rider to tackle the course designed by Great Britain’s
Michael Etherington-Smith. Read More.....

Hold the Whip Hand, But Germany Moves Closer
Germany's
Ingrid Kiimke produced a sparkling test with Abraxxas to squeeze
into third place as the final session of Olympic dressage took place
at Sha Tin this morning, but it is the Australian riders who hold
the whip hand going into tomorrow's cross-country phase with a firm
hold at the top of both the individual and team leaderboards.
Klimke's
fabulous 11 year old gelding really rose to the occasion and attacked
his test with enthusiasm. "I was pleased he was so forward" the rider
said after her score of 33.50 left her trailing overnight runner-up
Karin Donckers from Belgium by just over one point and leader, Lucinda
Fredericks, by just over three points. "He can be a very spooky
horse but he is always wanting to try for me". Ingrid entered
the arena at 6.44 am and found the atmosphere a little surreal. Read

Hong
Kong, China – Selena O’Hanlon of Elgin, ON, is Canada’s
top-placed equestrian athlete following the first of two days of
competition at the 2008 Olympic Games. Equestrian events are being
held in Hong Kong due to equine health concerns in mainland China.
Eventing, the first of three Olympic equestrian disciplines to be held
in Hong Kong, began competition on Saturday, August 8. Eventing is
comprised of three phases of competition held consecutively – dressage,
cross-country and show jumping. With 70 horses representing 24 nations
in Eventing, the dressage phase is held over two days, Saturday and
Sunday. Cross-country will take place on Monday, and the final phase,

Remains on Top; U.S. Team Third After Dressage Portion of Eventing
at 2008 Olympic Equestrian Games in Hong Kong
By Joanie Morris for USEF
Hong
Kong, China – The
second day of dressage got underway bright and early at Sha Tin and
the overnight leaders, the Australians, never looked in danger of
having their lead threatened. The same three scores the team used
yesterday (out of the five riders) held their lead on a total mark
of 102.80. The U.S. continued to well orchestrated plans, and their
two most experienced riders put in very solid performances to leave
the U.S. in third on a score of 115.60. Germany snuck ahead of the
U.S. after Ingrid Klimke (aboard Abraxxas) and Andreas Dibowski both
went into the 30s. Klimke jumped into third place on 33.50 with a
very impressive performance. The Germans are five points clear of
the U.S. going into the cross-country with 110.50. Read

Drama, Disappointment and Delight, but Lucinda Fredericks Maintains
her Lead
Belgium's
Karin Donckers threatened the first-session lead established by
Australia's Lucinda Fredericks as the second tranche of eventing
riders took their turn in the dressage arena at Sha Tin in Hong
Kong tonight. However,
despite a brilliant performance from Gazelle de la Brasserie, Donckers
had to settle for second place as the Australians took an even
firmer grip on the team leaderboard when Megan Jones and Irish
Jester charmed the Ground Jury to slot into third. With
Clayton Fredericks in fifth the Aussies hold three of the top-five
placings ahead of tomorrow's final dressage session and have a
19-point lead over the USA in second while team Germany lies third. There
was deep disappointment for the hard-hit French however when, following
the withdrawal of Jean Teulere's Espoir de la Mare due to injury
on Thursday, Nicolas Touzaint's Galan de Sauvagere suffered the
same fate tonight. Read

equestrian competitions began in Hong Kong only a few hours after
the Games of the XIX Olympiad were officially inaugurated during
a spectacular Opening Ceremony in Beijing. After the first 25 of
the 70 riders taking part in the Eventing competition performed their

Headley Britannia is firmly in the lead with 30.40 points.
She is
followed by husband and Australian fellow team member Clayton on
Ben Along Time (37 points). Gina Miles and Mckinlaigh of the United
