2002 Spring Euro Tour A Side Trip to Gettysburg June 16 - Onward to Gladstone, New Jersey for the USET Festival of Champions, with a side trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where in 1863 the most brutal battle of the Civil War took the lives of 50,000 Americans fighting each other in the war that pitted North and South, Union and Confederate against each other. We pulled into the KOA Campground, our usual selection, as the quality and consistency of comfort. For travelers without campers, and on a budget, most KOA's have Camper Cabins, and cottages, as well as sites for tenting and "big rigs" like ours. At this particular one, they even took dinner orders, and delivered to our campsite. Imagine, room service in a campground! After a long day on the road, this was a unique treat. Touring the National Park was a moving experience, as we drove along, following an audiocassette featuring different parts of the battlefield, and telling the story of the beginning of the end of the Civil War. Our dogs Winnie and Gizmo came along for the ride. Another auto tour of the region brought us along beautiful valleys of apple and pear groves, and vineyards reminiscent of Provence, France. Dinner at the Dobbins Tavern (we like the word Tavern!) in Gettysburg topped off our visit. |
