2004 CSIO Aachen

Chris Kappler, Winner of the Grand Prix Equitation Prize

July 19, 2004

Chris Kappeler on PrimeurChris Kappler was the best placing American with his fifth place in the Aachen Grand Prix. Aboard Primeur, a Westfalian gelding by Phantom, Kappler rode a clear first round but knocked down a rail in the second round. His time of 87.10 seconds, however, was the best of all riders in the second round with one rail down, putting him in fifth place. During the award ceremony, Chris Kappler was announced to be the winner of the Equitation Grand Prix prize. According to the jury, Kappler had the best seat and riding techniques of all Aachen Grand Prix riders.

McLain Ward and his Belgian warmblood mare Sapphire (Darco x Hedjaz) finished in 21st place with two rails down in the first round. Both Alison Firestone on Casanova and Beezie Madden on Judgement retired in the Grand Prix, as they knocked down too many rails at the beginning of the course. They chose not to fatigue their horses more by completing this huge course.
