2002 World Equestrian Games Tough
Race for Endurance Two nations were considered favorites for the World Championship, and each won a gold medal September 16. France took the team gold, and Sheik Ahmed bin Mohammed al Maktoum won the individual gold. France's team of Sunny Demedy, Elodie le Labourier, and Jean-Philippe Frances rode three gray Arabians to a time of 30:37:01. France had swept the individual medals in the 2000 World Championship. This time, Demedy earned the bronze. On the five phases of the 160.3-km race, France's riders maintained positions among the leaders. For the 40.4 km of Phase 1, Demedy on Fifi du Bagnas was in fifth place. Le Labourier rode Shango Limousian to 12th, and Frances stood 24th on Djellab HN. A total of 130 of 148 starters completed Phase 1. Phase 2 had 109 horses completing 78.3 km. The French team looked like they had the lead, although no team standings had been published yet. Two of the UAE team horses had been pulled, leaving them with two individuals. |
