2002 World Equestrian Games

Spaniard Wins The Special, American Takes Two Spot, German Stronghold Shattered

By Mary Hilton

Ferrer Salat The top 25 riders from the Grand Prix qualified to compete in the Special on September 13, and all four members of the German, US, and Spanish teams made the cut. Beatriz Ferrer-Salat of Spain on Beauvalais won the Grand Prix Special earning 77.00% with a performance that Volker Moritz of Germany, who judged at E, described as "the most secure test with less mistakes." US Team Member Debbie McDonald on Brentina placed second with 76.120%, and Germany's Nadine Capellmann on Farbenfroh was third with 75.880%.

This was yet another historic moment for the 2002 World Equestrian Games - the Germans had been beaten. Ferrer-Salat was awarded the Modesta Trophy for her win. The Special counts for one-third of the score that determines individual medals; the rider's score in the Grand Prix and the Freestyle are the other two factors. Only the top three riders from the teams that participate in the Special move on to the Freestyle on September 15. Fifteen riders are schedule to compete.
