Davis and Far From Home Triumph as Grand Pony Hunter Champions at 122nd
National Horse Show and Family Festival
In addition to the Grand Championship, Davis and Far From Home were champions in the Small Pony Hunter division and the winners of the Village of Wellington Small/Medium Pony Hunter Classic. Reserve champion in the Small Pony Hunter division was Treasure Me and Kaely Tomeu, who rode for Allison Oakley of Wellington, Florida. After winning both classes yesterday, Davis came to the show ring today with a positive attitude. “I didn’t really expect anything. I just wanted to ride my best and do the best I could,” she explained. They were fifth in the under saddle and won the last over fences class today for the division championship. Far From Home’s first classic round was his final division over fences class. They scored an 87.5 and were the leaders going into the second round in the classic. They had a solid ride and scored an 83.5 for a total of 171. Their final score was five points higher than the next competitor, Jennifer Waxman and Cavallo Farms’ Tuscany. “I knew I had a good score in the first round, so I was just going to ride my best,” Davis admitted. “He was maybe a little tired at the end, but it came together for me.” When asked about her victory at the prestigious horse show in Florida, Davis summed up, “I like the warm weather, because it’s cold up north! It’s fun seeing all of my friends and having a good time in the ring. He was very good. I thought I did great. I won practically everything!” She concluded, “I hope I can do good next year, but I don’t have any expectations.” Official Results: Village of Wellington Small/Medium Pony Hunter Classic
The Large and Medium Pony Hunter Championships were captured by the same rider, Jennifer Waxman. She and her extremely successful Medium Pony Tuscany won their fourth major championship of the year, while Waxman piloted Katie Hogan’s Hint of Blue for the first time this week in the Large Pony Hunters. Despite only having schooled Hint of Blue a couple times this week, Waxman and the adorable grey pony won three out of four classes in the Large Pony Hunter division. In the first round of the Village of Wellington Large Pony Hunter Classic, Waxman and Hint of Blue had an incredibly high average score of 90. They returned for the second round and scored an 86.5, which gave them a total of 176.5 and the win. Reserve champion in the Large Pony Hunters was Cherrybrook Blue Suede Shoes, ridden by Alexandra Thornton and owned by Dunwalke LLC of Bedminster, New Jersey. “I thought he was so much fun. You just keep galloping and he holds himself off. He has such a good front end that he can jump you out of anything,” Waxman said. “I just had a blast riding him.” Waxman and Tuscany had a fantastic 2005, as they captured tricolors at the Winter Equestrian Festival, Devon Horse Show, Pennsylvania National Horse Show, and the Washington International Horse Show. The win here was a little bittersweet since Waxman may not ride Tuscany next year. She has already started winning in the junior hunters and is preparing to compete in the junior jumpers. Tuscany won both over fences classes yesterday, and he was seventh under saddle and second over fences today. Reserve champion in the Medium Pony Hunter division was Light Up the Year, ridden by Katie Dinan and owned by Katie Dinan LLC. The road to winning has been a short one for Tuscany, who started gathering the championship ribbons almost immediately with Waxman. “He was a little green when we got him, but he’s come so far. He’s gotten so much better,” she remarked. She concluded, “He was so awesome. He’s just so nice. I know him so well, and I will always remember him.” Official Results: Village of Wellington Large Pony Hunter Classic
The Children’s Hunter champion at this year’s NHS was Savannah, owned and ridden by Casey Green of Westport, Connecticut. This is only her second show riding the beautiful, dark bay mare. The pair started at the Capital Challenge Horse Show, where they placed in every class. Reserve champion in the division was Little Boy Blue, ridden by Molly Braswell and owned by Sara Rutenberg. Green and Savannah won three out of the four classes in their division, which was a big accomplishment. “I wanted to try my hardest and have fun with her,” said Green. She is planning on showing Savannah in the Small Junior Hunters next year. Green seems to have made the leap from ponies to horses quite well. She explained, “I have a large pony that’s a lot like a horse, so he’s a good stepping stone to her. It’s not that much of a difference between those two, but between her and the smaller ponies, there’s a big difference.” About Savannah, she commented with a big smile, “She’s very smooth and lopey and is a lot more helpful than the ponies. She’s a lot easier, in a way.” Photo Credit: Megan Davis and Far From Home, Grand Pony Hunter Champions at the 122nd National Horse Show and Family Festival. Photo by Randi Muster. |
