Reined Cow Horse Actions Returns to Paso Robles

Jon Roeser Continues to Lead NRCHA Derby

Jon Roeser’s name stayed at the top of the leader board by the end of the second leg of competition, the rein work, and he actually claimed three of the top five composite slots. Roeser, who won the herd work on Mister Smart Remedy (Mister Dual Pep X Ima Smart Remedy), moved to the composite lead on Heart Of A Fox, a horse he owns with Steve and Karen Twisselman. His composite total was 434, just half a point ahead of John Ward on Jennifer Gamel’s Mister Smoking (Mister Dual Pep X Miss Smoking Leo).

Jon Roeser is tied for second with Ward on Mister Smart Remedy, owned by Larry and Sharon Rose. He’s also tied for fourth on Addy Oop (Smart Peppy Doc X Remedys Reaction) owned by Frank Velazquez & Julie Weinhardt

“It’s all in having good horses,” noted Roeser. A simple formula, indeed, but one that works for Roeser, who has been one of the most successful riders in reined cow horse competition.

Another rider, Shadd Parkinson, had one of those good horses on Thursday, when he rode Spursuasion (Ray Gay Quixote X Mist N Smoke) to a score of 221 to top the rein work. That score was good enough to earn him the Intermediate Open Rein Work top slot as well.

In the Intermediate Open division, it’s still the Jake Gorrell show. He rode Quick As Einstein (As Smart As The Fox X High Brow Jose) owned by Joe and Bobbie Stone to a 215.5 for a 432 composite and Shesa Little Pleaser (Chic Please X A Shining Starlett) owned by Dana Roulet to a total score of 430, to claim the top two Intermediate composite slots.

Chris Dawson topped the Limited Open Rein Work competition with a score of 217 on Lyle Lovett’s Shiney Missy (Shining Spark X Missy Lena), but the lead in the composite went to Jimmy Stickler with a 426.5 on Shesa Taris Catalyst (Taris Catalyst X Shesa Hickory) owned by Mel Smith.

In the Non Pro division, Michelle Cowan is leading the composite in both the Non Pro and the Intermediate Non Pro with a score of 433 on Stylin Elan (Docs Sylish Oak X Playboys’ Classy Chic). Michelle Strickland won the rein work preliminaries with a score of 219.5 on Nimbus Two Thousand (Nu Cash X That Ladys Especial).

In the Amateur division, Laurel Morais rode Brooksinics Sis (Brooksinics Badger X Chantillys Sis) to a composite lead at 422 after topping the Rein Work competition with a 215.

Exhibitors will compete in the cow work on Saturday and the top finishers will qualify for the finals to be held on Sunday. Action begins Friday at 8 am at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles, California.

The 2005 NRCHA Derby show will pay a record $340,000, up over 49% percent from last year’s $227,600.

On Friday evening at 6:30, the California Mid-State Fair will host a welcome barbecue in The Barn on the California Mid-State Fairgrounds.
