January 24, 2007 Welcome Books Announces "The Big Book of Horses"
In this collection of photographs, excerpts, and thirty of J. C.’s own whimsical drawings, The Big Book of Horses illuminates the equine’s status as an ancient symbol of power and mystique. Through toil and war, in dance, poetry, myth, and emotion, the horse’s influence has endured, forever branded on the human psyche. Welcome Books’ third addition to the popular Big Book series examines and celebrates this noble creature and its influence in our literature, our poetry, our sports, and our lives. Filled with the remarkable, the famous, the beautiful, and the bold, it’s a stunning tribute to these majestic animals.
J.C. Suarès is a designer of books, magazines, and newspapers. He has edited and designed three dozen books on animals including The Horse in Sport, The Jockey Club History of Thoroughbred Racing in America, The Rider’s Diary, and From Foal to Champion. Having owned numerous horses, he switched from hunters to polo ponies several years ago and regularly plays outdoor polo in the summer and arena polo in the winter. Not surprisingly, many of this designer/editor’s steeds bear names of typefaces (Bodoni, Calson, Torino); but his favorite will always be Lucas, a tough 22-year-old chestnut who will do anything to win.
