There’s No Stopping Jade Deter at 2007 Dressage at Devon

By Lynndee Kemmet for Dressagedaily.com

DeterAs if winning three gold-medals at this year’s North American Junior/Young Rider Championships wasn’t enough, Canadian Jade Deter decided to add to her winning collection by cleaning up in the Junior Rider competition at this year’s Dressage at Devon. The 16-year-old from Ontario province won both the FEI Junior Team Test and the FEI Junior Individual Test.

She took the wins on Mastermind, a 10-year-old Westphalian gelding by Montmarte out of Dayenna. Their winning score in the Junior Team Test was 66.250 percent. Placing second in that class was Jillian Kemenosh with Nelzon and a score of 64.583. Deter’s score in the Junior Individual Test was 70.250. Coming in second in the Junior Individual Test was Alexa Rice with Maarten and a score of 66.333 percent.

Deter, who trains with Ruth Koch and with Canadian Young Rider Team Coach Albrecht Heideman, was most pleased with her Individual Test score. “My goal today was to get a 70 percent and that’s what I did,” Deter said. But that score didn’t come without a bit of effort. Deter did her homework. After Friday’s ride, she took a look at the judge’s comments and one that stood out was that judge’s felt Mastermind was too short in the neck. “So today, I really worked on getting him in front of the bridle and that was successful,” she said.

Credit must also go to Mastermind, a horse that Deter said has “such a great personality. And he loves to work.” He also loves attention. The gelding has been winning every where he goes this past season and he’s quite full of himself and demands much attention. “He has such a huge personality. And, he’s very, very spoiled. When he wants attention, he wants attention,” Deter said.

I’m really lucky to have such good horse. He has such a great personality. He loves to work. Win today: I feel really good. My goal today was to get a 70 and that’s what I did. And I reviewed my test comments yesterday to see what they had to say and one comment mentioned was that he was short in the neck. So today I really worked on getting him in front of the bridle and that was successful.
