Trials and Tribulations Come As Newcomer Makes Trip to National Dressage Finals

By Nancy Degutis

Jane HanniganA newcomer who describes herself as “a nobody from Massachusetts without a coach” hit it big twice in the first two phases of the USEF National Intermediaire I dressage championship.

Jane Hannigan and Maksymilian (Elcaro - Elanor) brought home a 70.2 percent score in the Intermediaire I, an all–time first and dream of the professional horsewoman. It came on the heels of her 69.6 the day before for her Prix St. Georges test. By the second part of the three-day contest for the title, she was third overall behind the leaders, Steffen and Shannon Peters of California.

“I have always been a bridesmaid,” said the 34-year-old. “But today, getting third is like going to Disneyland.”
