Celebration at the Selection Trials Horse-Friendly Riding Conditions
The arena was nestled below a grassy bank, and shielded from a roadway by black vinyl fence drapes. The grandstand was topped with 27 American flags, while spacious tents accommodated VIP tables at ringside. Dick and Jane Brown, owners of Aragon and Nikolaus, gave the setting a very special addition—the same arena used in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. “It reminded me immediately of an international atmosphere,” said Peters. “And on top of that, we were able to ride in front of a home crowd.” Morse said, “I think it's a great venue with all the hoopla and activity. The small tour is a good place for horses to get a foundation.” Riders commented on the plusses, with Californians happy to avoid travel to the steamy East. “We have a better spectator number here, and the warmup arena is better,” said Seidel. He added that he liked the traditional feel of Gladstone. “But for the horses in particular, this is a little more friendly.” Seidel received credit for promoting the move from California, with Peters saying, “He didn't suggest it—he demanded it.” Seidel recalled how he supported previous years' suggestions to move to California: “I put my foot down and said, ‘You're going to do it this year.'” Although East Coast riders had to travel west, then east again, Dover said, “With regards to the best interest of the horses, the welfare of the horses, this cannot be surpassed. “It helps to have great conditions, because then the horses are happy to go.” Riders also appreciated the increased prize money, with the Grand Prix at $50,000, and $10,000 for the Intermediare I Championship.
