Klaus Balkenhol Symposium Attracts Top Riders and Horses

BrentinaHe constantly reminded riders and spectators to allow for rest periods in between work periods, to allow the horse's muscles to recuperate, thus developing over time in the proper fashion. He wanted to see swinging backs, rhythmic, even strides and lots of reach and activity from behind. He admonished several riders not to position the horse too much to the inside.

The riders were asked to be more assertive and decisive with the leg aids, more playful and giving with the rein aids. Balkenhol rode several of the horses, and commented about most of them that they were not as sensitive to the rider's requests as he would like.

But all was not deadly serious as Balkenhol used humor frequently, even making fun of his own tendency to ride with the reins too long. His love and respect for the horses was obvious throughout the symposium, and at one point he confessed that he'd ridden Debbie McDonald's Brentina because he just couldn't resist the opportunity to ride such a fine mare.

Riders and horses participating in the symposium included: Jan Ebeling/Feliciano; Mette Rosencrantz/Coco Belize; Charlotte Bredahl-Baker/Lanka; Jil Walton/Del Mar; Guenter Seidel/ Metropolitan; Jo Moran/Luxor; Kathleen Raine/Lord Glendale; Leslie Morse/Kingston; Chelsey Sibley/ Ijsselmeer; Debbie McDonald/Brentina; Steffen Peters/Grandeur; Christine Traurig/Etienne.

It was announced at the close of the symposium that Etienne was being sent to Europe to be sold.

The 2001 Klaus Balkenol Symposium was organized by Glenda McElroy and Pam Lane.
