| Paula Josa-Jones Premiers Ride Equestrian Dance Theatre Performance On Martha's Vineyard August 2 Gala To benefit Nature Conservancy of Martha's Vineyard Combining the centuries-old classical equestrian tradition of dressage, aerial and modern dance, internationally recognized choreographer Paula Josa-Jones will premiere RIDE August 2 - 4, 2001 at Red Pony Farm, West Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard. Following the premiere on August 2, the company will host a gala with a portion of the proceeds to go to support the Nature Conservancy of Martha's Vineyard. RIDE marks a new development in the Paula Josa-Jones/Performance Works repertoire, and brings to the performing arts genre a unique human/animal collaboration. As an equestrian who brings to the dance her experience riding and working with horses, the heart of RIDE is a commitment to the profound and mysterious connection between horses and humans, and a desire to communicate an "in the moment" relational quality among dancers, riders and horses. Integrating sampled sounds of Tuvan throat singers, horse sounds, and instrumental and vocal elements, the score is composed by long time collaborator Ingram Marshall. With costumes designed by Christiane Celle, the resulting 60-minute performance is stunning in its originality as riders dance (and vocalize); dancers are led by and lead the horses; and the horses guide the movement of the riders and the dancers. The dancers are Mia Keinanen, Harriett Jastremsky, Dillon Paul, Alissa Cardone, Ingrid Schatz, Deanna Pellechia and Paula Josa-Jones. Riders (and their horses) are Lindsay Smith and Roy Wind, Megan Smith and Judge, Jessia Benjamin and Goliath, Lauren Withers and Norman, Francesca Kelly and Bijili. RIDE will tour nationally following the Vineyard premiere. In addition to reconstructing the performance using horses and riders from local communities, RIDE workshops will include "movement with horses" clinics for "at risk" youth; and riding and movement lessons for children or adults with disabilities. Josa-Jones also plans to establish an ongoing presence for RIDE on the Vineyard, with a program of husbandry and riding for "at-risk" teens. On August 2, Josa-Jones/Performance Works will host a Gala Opening Party with a sampling of Vineyard cuisine and beverages, music by Barbara Hoy and her band, and an auction of several exciting items, including a painting by Allen Whiting and a horseback safari in the Rajasthan in India. A portion of the proceeds from the Gala will go to the Nature Conservancy of Martha's Vineyard. Ms. Josa-Jones and the Conservancy share a vision of the island that is based on the themes of husbandry, stewardship and responsibility, rooted in a deep listening relationship between humans and the natural world. Since 1985, Paula Josa-Jones/Performance Works has gained a national reputation for risk-taking adventurous dance theater. Josa-Jones has been called "one of the country's leading choreographic conceptualists" by the Boston Globe. She has developed a unique form of visually charged dance theater built on the sensuous experience of the body as landscape and source for movement, image and voice. The Village Voice describes her work as "powerful, eccentric and surreal." She creates works of total theater which combine rich imagery, virtuoso movement, evocative visual designs, and idiosyncratic use of music. FOR CALENDAR EDITORS
