Volckmar Named Leading Sire of FEI Dressage Horses by Sport Horse Owners and Breeders Association
According to the 1998 Dressage Sires report published by the Sport Horse Owners and Breeders Association, the California-based Dutch Warmblood stallion, Volckmar, dominated the rankings of sires of FEI level dressage horses in the U.S. Volckmar was the clear leader in two categories: total number of FEI horses (5) (which includes the 1997 USDF Prix St. Georges and Intermediate I Horse of the Year, Greystoke), and highest FEI median average (62.063) (Determined by literally averaging the median scores). In addition, Volckmar was ranked 26th in the Fourth Level Junior/Young Rider competition with Melissa Desmarais. In both categories, Volckmar dominated domestic and foreign-based stallions such as Bolero, World Cup I, Afrikaner xx, Frühlingsball, and the deceased Roemer. The FEI dressage sire rankings included all stallions represented by 3 or more FEI horses. Because the median scores for Training and First Level offspring can be considerably higher, a separate ranking was created for the evaluation of the FEI Level offspring of qualified sires. Volckmar is a son of the Thoroughbred stallion, Abgar xx, who frequently appears in jumping pedigrees. The combination of Joost and Abgar xx is probably one of the most important nicks for the production of international show jumpers, including the jumping sire Ommen. Abgar xx represents the Owen Tudor (Hyperion) sire line which also culminates in the important Hanoverian sire, Laurie's Crusador xx, through Welsh Pageant. In the U.S., Abgar's sire, Abernant, is probably best known as the sire of the USET jumper of the 60s, Aberali, who won the Puissance at Aachen in 1967 at 6'10". Another Dutch stallion, Wanroij (Symphonie), posted the highest overall average median score of 69.098, leading the Westphalian, Puritano (Palisander) and the Georgia-based Hanoverian, Prefix (Pascha). The overall ranking is based on the average of the median scores for offspring competing at all levels for any stallion represented by 3 or more horses. The Dressage Sires report catalogs over 1,500 dressage horses which competed and were ranked by USDF during 1997. These horses represent 1,139 sires of dressage horses of all breeds, from American Bashkir Curly to Welsh crosses. Copies of the Dressage Sires report will be mailed free of charge to SOBA members during January. Non members may purchase a copy at $15 from Sport Horse Owners and Breeders Association, 6753 Thomasville Rd., Suite 108-241, Tallahassee,FL 32312-3837.
