Pam Fowler-Grace's perspective and thoughts on the Linda McCartney Memorial Service part 3

by Pam Fowler-Grace

grace and pay n goHelene and Paul's friends assisted me in preparing for Pay N Go's entry, which would be through the back door of the church. We discussed the rubber backed cushioned ramps leading up the steps of the church. These were especially made for Pay N Go so he wouldn't have to try walking on the stone steps for his entry into the church. I was impressed how everyone was concerned for the safety and welfare of my horse. We also rehearsed the service several times by doing walk-throughs. By the time I left, I felt comfortable and confident of the upcoming performance. Everyone told me that we would be the highlight of the Memorial Service and how much our being there meant to Paul, their friends, and that Linda would be smiling down from heaven during my performance.

The next evening was our time to shine! I bathed, groomed, and braided my wonderful appaloosa to perfection. A nice young couple, Pat and Jen, picked Pay N Go up and transported him to the Riverside church. Christine and myself followed in her truck. Upon our arrival Christine coordinated with the NYPD and Paul's security force to assure a safe arrival. Sure enough 122nd street (behind the church) was blocked off just for Pay N Go. I was grateful for their foresight because the press and fans where everywhere and seemed out of control. We waited for two hours for the service to begin, but this gave me time to dress into my dressage attire, with my full shadbelly tuxedo, shiny new boots, and top hat that Paul had purchased for us. As we waited, I walked Pay N Go up and down the street to keep his muscles warmed up.
