Traverse City, MI - First time Horse Shows by the Bay competitors Willie Tynan and Cartier Van Schuttershoff jumped to an exciting victory this afternoon in the week two $10,000 Welcome Prix, sponsored by Positive Step Farm and Patrice Schreiber of Howell, MI. Tynan won the class over Juan Ortiz and David Beisel in a three-horse jump-off over a course set by Guilherme Jorge of Brazil.
With seventeen entries showing in the first round of the Welcome Prix, David Beisel and Berkley, owned by Foxridge Farms Stables, were the first pair to jump clean. They were shortly followed by Juan Ortiz riding Ghandi and then Willie Tynan and Cartier Van Schuttershoff, owned by Emily Skoggard. Beisel and Berkley returned first for the shortened course, but had one rail down to finish in third place, incurring four faults in a time of 41.814 seconds. Ortiz and Ghandi followed and put in a clear jump-off round in 44.449 seconds to take the lead. That lead did not hold for long however, as Tynan and Cartier Van Schuttershoff returned next and jumped double clear in 41.481 seconds to win the class.
Cartier Van Shuttershoff is a beautiful eleven-year-old Holsteiner stallion that Tynan got as a ride this February in Florida. "He has been super; he has won some 1.30m and 1.40m classes recently and I am glad that he actually won today because he has been second five times now," Tynan laughed. "He is just like a big pony; he always plays, he is always happy, and he is a really good horse."
"He is a stallion, but you would not think it because he is so well behaved. His character is what makes him," Tynan continued. "He is never grumpy; you can wake him up and he is happy to go and work. Out in the pasture he kicks about and plays and he is never really in a bad mood. He is just a really cool character."
Tynan has a farm in Battle Creek, MI, and bases his riding and training business out of there, although this was his first time showing at Horse Shows by the Bay since buying the farm two years ago. "I was supposed to come here last year when we moved up here at first, but we had some clients to take to Chicago," he stated. "Then last week I was going to come, but we had to go to a grand prix in Cleveland, so this is our first time here and so far it is good. We just brought this one horse for the welcome and the grand prix this weekend and then we have to go back to Chicago with some clients unfortunately, but we will definitely be here for all three weeks next year."
Tynan commented on today's class and his winning jump-off round, stating, "When we walked the course there were a couple of big fences and we thought that maybe we might get five or six clears, so I was surprised that there was only three. The footing was pretty good in fairness for the rain that we had yesterday. In the jump-off, I think I had an advantage of being last to go. I saw David go and he had a rail and I watched Juan go and he was a little bit slower than David, but he was clean, so he was the one to beat. I just had to try and go clever enough to be clear and then try to be quicker."
Horse Shows by the Bay Series II will continue on Saturday with a full schedule of hunter/jumper competition at Flintfields Horse Park. The scenic Grand Prix Ring will feature an exciting afternoon of competition for the junior and amateur riders as they compete in their division classics. The $5,000 Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic will be held first, sponsored by Turtle Creek Casino. The $10,000 Cavalor SJHOF Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Prix will follow, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Hagyard Equine Medical Institute of Lexington, KY.
