The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is in the process of converting to a new, fixed membership year. The USDF Participating Membership year will now be December 1 through November 30. The USDF Group Membership year will remain April 1 through March 31.
At the 2002 USDF Board of Governors meeting, a fixed membership year was proposed and supported by the delegates, with implementation to begin as soon as possible. In response to that directive, USDF membership will undergo a conversion during the 2004 membership year, with all one-year Participating Members having an expiration date of November 30, 2004. Because all USDF memberships will now expire on the same date and the membership year coincides with the USA Equestrian membership year, it will be easier for USDF members to remember their expiration date and renew before the busy show season.
Competitors and competition staff see this change as another step USDF is making towards simplifying the burgeoning paperwork requirements at shows. USDF Technical Delegate Council Chair Veronica Holt explained,
"I am certain I can speak for the USDF Competitors Council, Competition Management Council, and Technical Delegate Council in saying that we collectively applaud USDF for their quick response to this call for action from the Board of Governors. A fixed USDF membership year will clear up a lot of confusion, and make the check-in process more efficient, and make us all very happy."
This summer, USDF announced its first dues increase in four years, which will take place on January 1, 2004. All current Participating Members who renew before January 31, 2004, will receive their 2004 membership at the old rates, and their membership will be valid until November 30, 2004. Current members who delay their renewal until after January 31 will pay dues at the new rates and will receive fewer months of membership benefits than those who take advantage of the early renewal offer. Those Participating Members who have let their membership lapse or who are joining USDF for the first time will pay the new rate as of January 1, 2004, and their expiration date will be November 30, 2004.
