Wellington, FL-November 29, 2001- 14 year-old Kristen Vanderveen of Elvurn, IL captured the honors today in the 2nd qualifier for the FEI World Children's Jumping Final at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club. Vanderveen bested the field of 28 starters after she and Bull's Run Blew by You posted a clear round in the fastest time of 61.45. Vanderveen finished just over one second faster than 14 year-old Alexandra "Lexi" Carter of South Africa. Carter took second place aboard Kate's Bridge after crossing the finish line in 62.40 seconds. Third place went to Wellington's own, Dottie Grubb and her mount Pistol Pete. They crossed the timers in 64.50 seconds.
The starting field of 28 has been narrowed down after two qualifiers to 16 competitors. All competitors will start with zero points going into tomorrow's final competition. The "A" list is as follows: Lexi Carter (South Africa), Azul Mektoubdjian (Argentina), Kristen Vanderveen (USA), Elise Lesage (France), Rodrigo Luna Benitez (Argentina), Juan Giraldo (Columbia), Haylie Jayne (USA), Joshua Vanderveen (USA), Kelly Kozich (USA), Dottie Grubb (USA), Gubarev Svetlana (Russia), Cady Klimas (USA), Dovile Zelvarite (Lithuania), Amber Levine (USA), Edwin Verdung (USA) and Amelkina Svetlana (Russia).
Showcasing this event and the competitors is imperative to the continued growth of the sport of show jumping, as these young riders are those that aspire to become their nations next Olympians. Each course, designed by Steve Stephens, will be 10-12 obstacles with fence height's up to 4' and with spreads up to 4'7". Come watch Sun. at 2:00pm as these 16 International leading children's jumper riders, ages 12-14 do battle to determine who is the best in the world.
