Following their smashing debut with the Mid-Winter Dressage Fair in Burbank last month, the California Dreaming Productions organizing team is now finalizing preparations for their upcoming back-to-back showcase events, the Capistrano Dressage International CDI-W/Y/J/U-25 on March 21 - 24 and the Festival of the Horse CDI 3*/Y/J/U-25 on March 27 - 30, 2014. Both competitions will be held at the beautiful Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park in San Juan Capistrano, site of the 2004 and 2008 U.S. Olympic Selection Trials for Dressage. As valuable qualifiers for this summer's Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Normandy, France, the shows have attracted impressive entries for the CDI classes, including the top three-ranked Grand Prix horse/rider combinations in the country and favorites to once again join the U.S. Team: Steffen Peters with Legolas, Guenter Seidel and Coral Reef Wylea, and Jan Ebeling aboard Rafalca, who are ranked #1, #2, and #3 respectively according to the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) National Grand Prix Ranking List (dated March 17, 2014).
By creating two elite dressage shows on consecutive weekends in the same location, California Dreaming Productions is providing a destination event: a special way for riders to maximize qualifying opportunities not only for WEG but local, regional, and national championship programs as well, all while enjoying the attractions and atmosphere of Southern California. The response has been overwhelming, with a record number of entries received (necessitating early closure of entries), sold-out VIP and brunch services during the shows, and new sponsors joining an already impressive lineup of supporters which include CDI series presenting sponsor Hof Kasselmann.
Both shows will also feature the wildly-popular live streaming video service with expert commentary by FEI 5* (ret) judge Axel Steiner. Viewers enjoying television coverage in the on-site competitor lounge and VIP areas or watching from their home computers around the world will once again be able to share in live action from the CDI arena thanks to expanded streaming coverage from The Chronicle of the Horse's Chronicle TV, as well as with the support of commentary sponsors Iron Spring Farm (for the Capistrano Dressage International) and the Los Angeles Chapter of the California Dressage Society (Festival of the Horse). Additional special competition features which were also warmly received during last month's Mid-Winter Dressage Fair will return, including lavish prizes for winners of classes at all levels; closed-circuit televisions; competitor hospitality; well-appointed VIP areas; and special arena footing. When not trotting down centerline, exhibitors will enjoy nearby beaches and attractions; a "Throwback Thursday" 80's-themed competitor party on Thursday, March 27th at Vintage Steakhouse; extensive equestrian shopping from a variety of vendors; and the added excitement of the Blenheim Spring Classic I & II hunter/jumper show and Grand Prix jumping event during the Festival of the Horse.
Both the Capistrano Dressage International and Festival of the Horse feature renowned judging panels, and include Stephen Clarke (5* GBR) and Lilo Fore (5* USA) who will be serving as members of the ground jury for the World Equestrian Games later this year. Clarke and Fore will be joined by Eddy de Wolff van Westerrode (5* NED), Sarah Geikie (4* USA), Jane Weatherwax (4* USA), Maria Schwennesen (4* AUS), Brenda Minor (4* CAN), Bo Ahman (4* SWE), Lorraine Macdonald (4* CAN), and Mike Osinski (3* USA). In addition, the Capistrano Dressage International has been designated by the USEF as an official Developing Program Observation Competition, where US Dressage Technical Advisor/Chef d’Equipe Robert Dover will be in attendance to observe riders in select classes in an effort to spot and select talented combinations for coveted invitations to training sessions and grants.
General spectator admission to the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park, located at 30753 La Pata Avenue, San Juan Capistrano, CA is free.
