Top 2-Year-Olds Ready for Governor's Cup Trials

Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CA - June 5, 2003 - Metallic Lion, the runner-up in the Kindergarten Futurity, the highly-rated A Very Kool Chick and Kindergarten finalists Pencilmein and Fast Goin Chick are among the 54 2-year-olds that will compete in Friday's trials to the Governor's Cup Futurity at Los Alamitos.

Seven trials at 350 yards will be contested with the horses with the 10 fastest times returning for the $342,500 final on June 21. The Governor's Cup will be part of California Breeders Champions Night; an exciting evening of racing that will also feature the Governor's Cup Derby and Spencer Childers Championship Handicap.

Sired by Chicks Beduino and out of millionaire mare Corona Kool, A Very Kool Chick will be looking to make amends in this trial after running sixth in the Kindergarten heats back on May 3. Donna McArthur now expects a new and improved version of A Very Kool Chick this time around.

"She has been doing great," McArthur said. "We let her go 350 yards the other morning and she looked good doing it. She just did not leave running in the Kindergarten trials. When she did not pop out of the gate in the Kindergarten trials, I knew she was done because usually she flies out of the gate. Now that she's raced at least once, I'm more optimistic about her chances."

A Very Kool Chick will face recent maiden winner Dream Dollars and Hawk The Cash, who ran second to the solid winner Flipnfly on May 22.

McArthur will also send out Honor And Cherish in the third heat, Dividends Declared in the fifth and Long Stemmed Roses in the seventh. "Honor And Cherish will benefit from the extra 50 yards," McArthur said. "Dividends Declared had to stands in the gate for a while in her debut and that didn't help because she can be a little hot. Things have to be foolproof for a first time starter to beat horses that have already raced."

Dividends Declared will have to deal with Anjora Corp's Metallic Lion, already a two-time winner and the runner-up in the Kindergarten final. In the Kindergarten, Metallic Lion covered the 300 yards in :15.31 while eventual winner Hawkish set a new track record of :15.18.

"Metallic Lion ran his race and we were happy with his effort in the Kindergarten," said Anjora's agent, Gustavo Valenzuela. "We're looking forward to seeing how he does in the Governor's Cup."

As for McArthur, the trainer is a high on the First Down Dash filly Long Stemmed Roses, who will be taking on Kindergarten finalists Pencilmein and Fast Goin Chicks in the seventh and final heat.

"She's the only winner out of my four fillies in the Governor's Cup," McArthur added. "She's been training as well as any of my other horses and she has a lot of potential. She has been a little anxious in previous race but the fact that she has already made three starts should help her. I like her chances."

Pencilmein and Fast Goin Chick, the sixth and seventh finishers, respectively, in the Kindergarten final, also faced Hawkish in the trials. Pencilmein was a nose behind Hawkish in the trials, while Fast Goin Chick crossed the wire another nose back. Blane Schvaneveldt will saddle Pencilmein, while Jose Flores will send out Fast Goin Chick.

Cathy Monji's Hayabusa and Absher and Merriott's Devoted Word are among the leading contenders in the third heat, while Marmet Too, who is undefeated this year, and Kindergarten trial winner Rocket Me Fast are among the horses to watch in the sixth. Righteous Brother, a full brother of 2000 World Champion A Ransom, and Brandy And Candles, a half-sister of multiple derby winner Check Him Out will also see action in this race.

Righteous Brother campaigns for Pazazz Quarterhorses Ltd, who also own Lani Chick. The latter is one of the favorites in the fourth trial based on her impressive 3/4-length triumph on May 10. Lani Chick will have to deal with West Texas Futurity finalist Shez Foxy Brown and Kindergarten trial winner Dreaming First. By the way, Dreaming First beat A Very Kool Chick.
