Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath

Although horses, the internet and life as a Phelpette seem to cover all of Appels' daily time, more work load is added to her schedule with her profession as a Ph.D. research fellow.

"I started this year as a doctorate student at the University of Brussels," Appels explained. "My research is about intermediality and visual art in the poetry of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes". After graduating summa cum laude at the University of Brussels (VUB) with a Master's thesis on mythology and polytheism in the lectures of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Appels felt herself morally obliged to pursue an academic career.

"I love doing research. I love reading books, I love poetry and I love literature. I love using my brain for a higher purpose and think that a Ph.D. is the best way to apply my cognitive talents onto real life. I'll continue doing the websites and travelling with Mary and riding my horses, but this is something I have to do too," Astrid vowed.
