Suzy Stafford will try to win her third straight single horse driving title at the Live Oak International, scheduled for Feb. 25-28, but this time she’ll have a Hall of Fame horse in the harness.
Stafford’s 8-year-old Morgan, PVF Peace of Mind, was recently selected to the Horse Stars Hall of Fame for 2016. Better known as Hunny, the mare has led Stafford to her two previous Live Oak titles and was also named USEF International Horse of the Year for 2015. Hunny was also in the harness when Stafford won the 2015 USEF Single Horse Driving National Championship.
“I’m extremely honored to be in the company of the other great horses in the Hall of Fame. She is an amazing horse. I really have a good relationship with her,” Stafford said. The Hall of Fame was established by the EQUUS Foundation and the United States Equestrian Federation in 2013.
Stafford purchased Hunny as a 3-year-old after watching her drive for her previous owner. “She was always a very lovely mover. She has an extremely good character,” she said.
Stafford feels confident with her chances of winning a third straight title at Live Oak. “The horse is going extremely well. Unless something odd happens, I’m feeling pretty confident. She’s going better than she was last year,” she said.
Stafford enjoys attending Live Oak, not just because of the competition, but also because of the atmosphere. “I love the show. It pulls in the jumpers and drivers, but there is also a bunch of other things for the spectators. They have great vendors that sell a variety of items, not just horse stuff,” she said. “I think it’s a good weekend for anyone to come and have a good time outside.”
