Wellington, FL – Corta-Flx®, an official sponsor of the Adequan Global Dressage Festival, has been honoring horses who exemplify exceptional fitness and soundness with the Corta-Flx Sport Horse of the Week Award throughout the prestigious dressage competition season in Wellington, Florida. The company’s latest award went to Doktor, a 14-year-old Oldenburg gelding (Diamond Hit x Renoir) ridden by Shelly Francis and owned by Patricia Stempel, both of Loxahatchee, Florida.

Doktor and Francis are seasoned international Grand Prix competitors, consistently scoring in the 70th percentile at dressage shows in Europe and the U.S. Their hard work and talent earned the pair a place as alternate on the 2014 U.S. dressage team at the World Equestrian Games in France and again on the 2016 U.S. Olympic team in Brazil.

“It’s been a long road for this horse,” Francis said of Doktor. “He has a little bit of fear in him, and it took him a long time to get over that, but he’s getting better all the time. He is the most intelligent horse I’ve ever trained. You can tell by his eyes – he knows what’s going on.”

Francis said that training horses to the upper levels comes “little by little, and then before you know it one day they are all trained.” She added thoughtfully, “It takes a little perseverance and then understanding when a horse is maybe misinterpreting what you want but still trying. Some people think the horse is being bad, but sometimes they just make a mistake if they don’t understand. You have to be a little bit patient.

As Francis accepted her Sport Horse of the Week Award ribbon and full-sized Corta-Flx® and U-Gard® supplements, she explained that her goals with Doktor this year are “to do the best we can and stay on the world ranking list. We may go to Europe and do a couple of CDIOs.” The pair is currently well ranked in 57th place out of 300 combinations listed on the FEI World Individual Dressage Rankings.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Corta-Flx was pleased to present Francis and Doktor with the Corta-Flx Sport Horse of the Week Award to honor Francis for going the extra mile to help keep her equine partner healthy, happy, and performing at his best.
