Belinda Trussell of Stouffville, ON, won the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Freestyle at CDI *** Cincinnati, held at Paxton Farms in Batavia, Ohio, on May 9-11, 2003.
Trussell, a member of Canada’s 2002 World Equestrian Games Team, riding her horse Royan II, a 13-year-old Oldenburg gelding, easily won the Grand Prix on Friday, May 9, with a score of 67.46%. Fellow Canadian, Evi Strasser of Ste. Adele, QC, aboard her 12-year-old Oldenburg gelding, Pryme Tyme, finished second with a score of 62.83%. Finishing in third place, with 62.25%, was Tom Dvorak of Hillsburgh, ON, aboard Sheri and Keith Dumonceaux’s 11-year-old Dutch warmblood stallion Kadans. Gillian Sutherland of Unionville, ON, and Karen Soupcoff's 11-year-old Oldenburg gelding, Justin Tyme, finished in fifth.
In Sunday’s Grand Prix Freestyle, Trussell, riding Royan II, won with a commanding score of 73.23%. Dvorak and Kadans finished in third with a score of 66.72%, Sutherland riding Justin Tyme placed fourth with 65.55%, and Strasser finished in fifth place with 63.48%.
Trussell, for her victories at CDI*** Cincinnati, was awarded the high point gift of a lovely diamond stud courtesy of Diamond Legacy.
For her second CDI in a row, Trussell and Royan II have been unstoppable. At CDI *** Port Jervis, Trussell won all the Grand Prix classes offered aboard Royan II. With these recent, solid victories, the duo are top contenders for a spot on the Canadian Team heading to the 2003 Open European Championships with the goal of qualifying a Dressage Team for the 2004 Olympics Games in Athens, Greece.
“I feel so fortunate to have been able to achieve competitive international scores at these last two FEI competitions,” remarked Trussell. “Royan has stayed true to his nature. He is so willing and he never lets me down.”
Dr. Dieter Schuele, an FEI ‘O’ judge from Germany and President of the Ground Jury, was extremely impressed with Trussell’s riding, awarding her a world class score of 74.125% in the Freestyle. Dr. Schuele will also be a member of the Ground Jury for the 2004 Olympic Games.
Similar to her results at CDI *** Port Jervis, Trussell also had a double victory in the FEI six-year-old First Qualifier test with a score of 79.0% and FEI six-year-old Test- pre selector with 80.0% aboard Grand Marnier, a Hanoverian gelding owned by her husband Mark Trussell.
In the Prix St. Georges test on Friday, Strasser finished in eighth spot with 62.95% aboard Quantum Tyme, her eight-year-old Oldenburg gelding. Vincent Carovillano of London, ON, placed ninth aboard his horse Cancion, a nine-year-old Holsteiner gelding. Sutherland riding Karolos, an 11-year-old Danish warmblood gelding owned by Karen Soupcoff, finished in 11th place.
In the Intermediare I on Saturday, Strasser and Quantum Tyme placed seventh with a score of 62.65%. Sutherland and Karolos finished in eighth with 61.65%. Also competing in Intermediare I was Carovillano riding Cancion and Piaget, a Hanoverian owned by Kathryn Ayers.
On Sunday, Strasser and Quantum Tyme won the Intermediare I Freestyle competition with a strong score of 68.23%. Sutherland and Karolos also performed a solid test and received a score of 66.70% and third place.
